About Zulu
Zulu (isiZulu) is the most widely spoken indigenous language in South Africa and a cornerstone of the country's cultural identity. It is one of eleven official languages of South Africa and is understood — in whole or in part — by tens of millions more through its close relatives Xhosa, Swati and Ndebele.
Zulu is famous for its three click consonants (c, q, x), its rich noun-class system, and its deeply musical cadence. Every Zulu word stresses the second-to-last syllable, which gives the language a steady, almost rhythmic flow that works beautifully in song — from traditional maskandi to modern house and gospel.
For diaspora families, Zulu is a powerful heritage language to pass on — it is spoken in Johannesburg taxis, Durban kitchens, Cape Town stages and rugby stadiums alike.
'Sawubona' — Zulu's most common greeting — literally means 'I see you'. The reply, 'Yebo, sawubona,' means 'Yes, I see you too.' Language here is about mutual recognition.
A handful of Zulu to take away
These appear across our puzzles — every word in the app is paired with a translation and a spoken voice.
- •Practise the clicks in isolation before trying whole words.
- •Sing. Zulu is taught to children through song in almost every home — copy that instinct.
