About Xhosa

Xhosa (isiXhosa) is one of South Africa's eleven official languages and the mother tongue of some of the country's most iconic figures — including Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. It is spoken by roughly 8 million people as a first language and shares deep roots with Zulu, with which it is largely mutually intelligible.

Xhosa is the most click-rich language Linguistic Quest currently covers. It uses all three basic clicks (c, q, x) alongside voiced, nasal and aspirated variations — fifteen click sounds in total. They sound extraordinary, and children typically master them faster than adults.

Xhosa is a language of poetry, praise and oratory. The imbongi (praise poet) tradition is still alive at weddings, funerals and national occasions, and the language retains an oral authority that is rare in the modern world.

'Molo' is a greeting to one person; 'Molweni' is a greeting to many. Even the hello changes depending on your audience — a tiny lesson in respect.

Tips from our editors
  • Don't worry if clicks feel impossible at first. Two weeks of five-minute daily practice is usually enough.

Pick a theme to play

Each theme gathers 40–80 words, phrases and idioms. Every puzzle type teaches the same vocabulary in a different way — children absorb the words faster because they meet them again and again from new angles.
